'In the dead of night when thick darkness settles, after a heavy rain poured / with cloud-hosts of roaring thunder, / wearing heavy earrings gleaming like unfurling lightning, / her hair wavy in released plaits, / swaying like a peacock descending a hill, / I saw her climb down the wattled fence and go' — / so do not afflict her, mother! May you live long! / Upon the slopes haunted by Cūr beside our garden, / spirits capable of taking any form they wish come adorned with bright flowers; / and for those who sleep, dreams arise / that delude them just like waking truth! / Indeed, this girl trembles if left alone without a lamp; / if an owl screeches frightfully in the common marāam tree, / she is stricken at heart and seeks shelter; / above all, while our father of fierce prowess and anger like Murukaṉ / is not at home, having unleashed his pack of tiger-like dogs, / would she not be afraid to do such a thing?
