O dear, lovely friend! Do not be consumed by deep sorrow, / thinking, 'My lover has departed through the crossroads / where men of curved bows and well-made arrows / bend and draw their terrifying, sturdy bows, / round up long herds of many cows with loud tumult, / and, triumphant in their vast desire, harass the difficult frontier, / dance to the beat of fierce, loud-sounding tuṭi drums, / and feast on boiled meat, wearing dry-leaf garlands, / beside the abandoned stone hearths where the salt-merchants rested / after unyoking their many heavy-humped bullocks / from curved-yoked carts proclaiming salt like white stone grown in clear backwaters.' / Even if he reaches Āmūr of far-famed renown, / whose high wall of bright appearance is guarded at its curved summit / having broken the massive, tusk-ringed tusks / of small-eyed elephants with beetle-swarming temples, / belonging to the Vāṉavaṉ of victorious warfare with large, bow-bearing hands, / situated to the east of the small hill with slopes of fragrant flowers / whose lofty crest thunders with heaven's fine thunderbolt, / he is not one to settle down and abide there, / forgetting to embrace your breast that bears ornaments.
