When a dark cloud bank, unfathomable in size,
like a deep waterhole that never shrinks as water is drawn,
rose looking like the ocean into the vast sky,
and lightning flashed and flickered like ribbons of flame,
shattering swift downpours with fierce-crashing thunder
in the middle of the night poured out by the sky without respite,
I watched for a moment of neglect by the guards of difficult watch,
and as the chilly, swaying wind buffeted me, I stood at one side of her father's tall mansion;
and she—with tresses gleaming like black river sand, cool dark-petaled eyes
wavering like blossoms in her radiant face, white teeth gleaming like sprouts
and arranged like rows of buds, a lovely coral mouth shining with noble smile,
swinging her well-fashioned splendid bangles, trembling unceasingly
like a shoot caught in the wind—
embraced me so that my sorrow and languor vanished!
She who was hard to obtain, like the celestial nymphs
upon the slopes of the tall mountains of straight peaks,
where cascades gleam as they descend, appearing beautiful
like the victorious flags adorned on the male elephants of the golden-ornamented Pāṇḍya
with his army of bows, lighting up the mountain slopes joined by vēṅkai trees
and jackfruit trees bearing abundant fruit whose yield never fails,
belonging to Atikaṉ of warrior anklets and armlets,
who knows no failure in fulfilling the desire of suppliants who seek him
and bestow truthful renown!
