Because the soft-headed young female elephant fell into a pit,
terrified by the commotion of the roaring tusker,
the red-mouthed calf, hastily abandoned,
in the ancient village with lanes of powdered dung,
sucks at the full udders of the fine buffalo cow:
for the good girl who traversed many countries of such a sort,
her playmates lost their ornaments and grieved! Her mother too,
crying, 'Give me your sweet shoulders, let my life depart!'
stroking her eyes and forehead, in the cool,
striped shade of the spreading nocci tree,
crowning [her] with the withered kuvaḷai flower kept in a jar,
embracing the doll that lay on the brought sand,
wept, 'Is this my precious daughter?'
