'If the filtered brew, aged for many days in jars
clustered around good trees, is broken open,
it spatters across the street like a mist of mingled rain
at the gates of Vēḷūr with ancient, abundant grain;
if I am such as to turn to the one with adorned dark tresses,
whom you suspect, let the fearsome deity strike me,
who receives lofty offerings, around which bees with speckled stripes
do not depart but swarm over the fragrant-budded garland sprinkled with sweet scent!'
Thus the lord of the agricultural tract reassures his wife;
if he is indeed so, who was it, live long, companion!
who yesterday held the lead float of a tusker decked with garlands,
gleaming with fresh bridal ornaments, alongside us,
and bathed in the bank-brimming, newly risen flood
of the Kāvērī?
