With the dark woman of green-beaded loins
of well-formed beauty rubbed with sparkling gems,
on the flower-decked bed made with exquisite artistry,
abiding in the sky-touching tall mansion, today indeed
has passed in sweet union; tomorrow,
shall we rest, O heart, with sleepless eyes
as grief of separation comes and afflicts us,
in the ancient ruins overgrown with sponge-gourds,
abandoned by the villagers who fled in fear of the deadly enmity
of bent-bow men of tormenting arrows
who strike caravans and eat their gathered goods along the paths;
where a large-trunked elephant that grazed on drumstick trees
rubbed its high back and nape against the tall brick wall
so that the crossbeam collapsed;
where, because the deity painted with ornament departed
from the wooden mansion forsaken by gem-like doves,
the unwashed, bare veranda, having forgotten the regular offerings, looks dull;
where pups of the nursing bitch leap into the wide-mouthed hut;
and sharp-mouthed termites with pointed heads have swarmed and ruined
the carved pillars, covering the thatched assembly pavilion of fine eaves
where war now sleeps?
