Treetops charred, the fertility of the earth withered,
in the fire-blazing clearing roofed with shimmering sunbeams,
the leftover meat of a huge tusker felled and eaten by a tiger,
abandoned on iron spits by the noisy warriors,
is taken by the salt merchants in groups, like the ambrosia born of the loud-waved sea,
who light a small fire with rubbing sticks
and add it to the rice pot boiling with sweet spring water:
thinking of us who have crossed many such wilderness tracts,
her body entirely overspread with pallor,
deeply brooding in the lonely evening when the setting sun dims,
her forehead resting on her soft fingers,
as cold tears stream from her eyes like water spat by a kayal fish,
with the misery of her broad shoulders wasting away,
she suffers indeed, the poor girl of fine jewels!
