The seaside grove will not reprove; the backwater will not speak;
the fragrant-flowered punnai where bees hum will not say a word;
there is no one else for me except you alone.
To the lord of the shore, whose swarm of bees, having feasted on cool pollen,
desiring the scent of fragrant petals of the eye-like neytal
blossomed in the dark backwater as if it were ambrosia,
grows weary of flight with excess of joy,
you must speak, O crab!—
in the dead of night when the small sea crow,
resting in misery on the branched bough of the screwpine of many roots,
dreams of white prawns beside its lovely mate
on the hunting-silent expanse where horned sharks roam:
'Will she who removed your distress
swim across her own distress?'
