O man of the hill country, where fowls shriek on the water-gleaming slope, / where bright white waterfalls blended with honey fall with a rush, / resounding within the mountain clefts and caverns / like the sweet sound of roaring drums, / on the high mountain slopes entwined with bamboo tops; / where the forest tribesman, with dark hands like forged iron, / leans against a bur-flower tree with blossoming flowers, chooses his arrow, / sinks it deep into the vulnerable chest of an elephant with a striped forehead, / takes its white tusk of battle-defying strength / to prop up his thatched hut so it dries, / and rejoicing with delight in the liquor fermented from jackfruit resembling a drum in his front yard, / exults greatly with his kin, / and boils meat upon sandalwood embers! / I did not know that you were without love; / had I known that, / that golden pallor of separation would not have spread / to destroy the sapphire-like, glorious beauty / of this young girl with adorned jewels, kohl-rimmed eyes, and petal-fine lips!
