When the cruel men whose drawn aim never misses / from their strong, speedy bows bent to the stretched limit, / release red-tipped arrows that screech with each shot, / taking the lives of passing wayfarers, / a flock of kites calls out and seizes the decaying carrion; / he who traversed that hot wasteland tract, assuring your heart, / made solemn vows hard [to break], grasped your forearm / adorned with many fine, chosen bangles, and said: 'We shall finish our task / and return'—is it not so, my friend?— / at this time when the cool-raining clouds descend, / flashing repeatedly like the spear raised by the generous Ceḻiyaṉ of the wind-swift tall chariot, / after winning the battle at Ālaṅkāṉam, / sounding harsh thunders in the vast sky like war-drums, / bending the rainbow across the land like the garland resting on the battle-quelling chest / of the lord with the discus filled with straight rays, / and spreading far, bringing forth the fertility of the fearsome earth!
