In the wetland where birds twitter amid blossomed lotuses,
with wide expanse looking like the sea,
with mature tuberous roots sunken deep splitting the earth,
with hollow, rounded stems resembling bamboo canes,
flanked by green leaves like elephant's ears,
and where, between thick buds rising like stakes,
many flowers gleam like smiling faces,
a long-eyed fresh-water crab, looking like a neem bud,
afraid of the white heron seeking prey,
runs through the dark slimy mud of neighboring thick Indian jalap vines
which marks it with speckles, and quickly slips
into its wet mud burrow—O lord of such a town!
Wearing a rich leaf-garment fashioned with fine-petaled water lilies
and thick creepers of house-grown spinach climbing upon trees,
you shone in the linked dance along with the women celebrating the festival;
and because you let slip the long embrace
intertwined with the small bangles on the forearm of her with choice jewels and flower-like kohl-lined eyes,
did she, your lover, become angry?
Is she under any duty—like us—to bear a son with thin, bristly tuft
and live without you in this mansion filled with paddy?
Wailing and weeping so that the painted beauty of her face was ruined,
with anger rising as though she had been beaten,
wringing her soft fingers reddened as if snapped repeatedly,
and showing her sharp teeth with dulled tips—
go to see her, while the whole town talks of you!
