On the slopes of the proud mountain whose peaks touch the sky,
where the mirage runs along paths impassable,
in the vast forest hard to enter where spreading fires hasten,
though a small-eyed elephant stretches out its long trunk
and opens its mouth to the sky, it receives no bountiful water,
and languishes in distress at the wilderness across the wide expanse;
along the path marked by hero stones inscribed with good deeds,
raised for men of bent bows and red arrows shot from the bowstring,
where cries of distress beneath the file-like saw cannot find anyone to banish them—
if you desire to traverse such an arid wasteland,
while she of sweet smile, whose coral mouth has sharp teeth rounded like the quill of a feather,
whose kohl-lined eyes resemble the freshly opened kuvaḷai flower,
pines with her bright forehead lovely as the moon—
will it be possible for you to leave your homeland and dwell apart?
