O heart, if you cannot endure the wilderness difficult to cross,
and ponder turning back,
tell me of my state!—
Driving his battle-spear, slaying in war, Miñili of swelling vast army
who overcame the guarded fortifications of his foes,
fought with Muruku-like prowess until the battlefield turned red,
and when Āy Eyinaṉ fell,
swarms of strange birds, hiding the brilliant rays and glow of the sun all at once,
rose into the wide sky in a tumultuous flock and gathered,
carrying fine silt from the great river Kāvērī of swift water and arrow-like speed
flowing past wide banks where flowers spread,
and made white dunes of heaped sand;
in the town endowed with the new wealth of the kings,
famed for good renown sweet-smelling throughout the earth,
where women in garden mansions surrounded by ponds,
fashioned with beauty upon the banyan-tree courtyard of the three-eyed Lord of the ancient book of the four Vedas,
remain at the bathing ghats holding handmade dolls—
there, in the good realm of Pukār of tall mansions soaring high into the sky
with fish-crested walls that touch the heavens,
lies the great hillock of sand on the fragrance-wafting street
where the maiden dwell, wondrous and enchanting,
with bee-thronged five-part braided tresses smelling of unbartered goods,
and soft shoulders delightful to see, resembling thick bamboo poles.
