“Though he has gone to distant parts, having abandoned us without mercy
for the deep desert pathway, so that your kohl-lined eyes like blue water lilies weep
and the fair beauty-spots on your loin-girdle fade,
he will not delay very long,” you say, my friend!
Drinking water, having crossed the wide ocean of cold shores where sounds cease,
taking an abundance of swollen waves, rising to the west,
appearing everywhere like a herd of pregnant cow-elephants,
the dark clouds in large hosts have massed together:
the rainy season has arrived in the morning!
In the evening, as the chilly wind of the cold dewy season scatters
the unending fragrance opening from the bee-touched mouths
of the sharp-budded blossoms of the cold pitavu,
with our hearts troubled by the shaking chill,
will we not suffer greatly on account of the one who parted from us?
