Not only to the good woman of celebrated excellence,
who bore a son and became a beacon to the family
with godlike chastity, but to me as well
it is sweet! May your life prosper!
With an exalted heart, having finished a difficult task,
leaving behind the woodland where bees hum over blossoms,
in the blossom-fragrant pastureland where white pidavu opened,
where thick mullai vines covering the stunted heads
of short-thorned spurge on deep ravines
shed fresh flowers which he scatters with his breath,
and the beautiful stag with twisted horns drinks clear water
and rests with the dotted hind;
where laborers brandishing weeding sticks have hooks in their hands
and, partaking of liquor, sway in festive revelry;
as the crimson sky came on with the sun of fading rays,
while many bells along the harness of your fine chariot
rang together like a waterfall upon rock—
O eminent lord!—you came and stood.
