Sleeping so that loneliness of the shoulders was removed, / our secret union prolonged for many days / having ceased because of sense of shame, / going with a heart determined on rare wealth in a far country, / our lover has considered our high worth—will it be desolate, / O friend, the courtyard of our prosperous house spread with fresh sand, / like the first day of the festival of flower-garlands / of the cruel-eyed Maḻavar warriors adorned with long hero-anklets / upon swift-galloping steeds that shattered the hostile frontline of foes? / In that manless place of lofty, barren-topped ñemai trees, / in the small-hamleted settlement clinging to the rocks, / entertained as a guest by day, staying securely by night, / while the forest on the summer mountain is parched / with dark-trunked yā trees having branched bright tender shoots / resembling the dangling wattles of a domestic rooster, / in the difficult path of the ruined land where people fled when battle arose, / where green-eyed elephants feed on the pale inner bark of palmyras, / in the season of the tender sun before the bright rays mature, / swimming across the cold ford where sharp-mouthed sharks / rest in sleep with fins tucked in, / like the boat on the ocean where stay the unkind fisherfolk / who rose longing for the day's catch, / in the arid wilderness blocked by black-peaked great mountains?
