As the forest of jackfruit trees with green fruits scorched / and the sky's face was ruined while the summer lengthened, / in the elevated, rocky region where pools dried up, / an elephant embraced his young cow whose breath grew hot, / raised a roar like warriors marching to a festival in another land who lift their drums, / and cleared a path along the high mountain slope / pointing to the arid wilderness path of hot hills; / slowly, following him, the young girl / with freckled loins whose flowing slope wore fine flower garlands / went and became another's, / and more than me, who searches the quarters with sorrow full of longing / and sits confounded in the house, / this town—where sweet instruments of good drunkards rejoicing in toddy / echo in streets where chariots roll— / has lost its cherished treasure!
