Fresh flowers of the path's trumpet-flower with soft downy tips / mixed and strung between flaming petals of the oleander / in a bee-swarming chaplet bound on broad leaves; / salt merchants with whips and gravel-pounding feet wrapped in hide / draw their long line like a village seen from afar; / the curved bells sounding on their untiring, strong-legged, well-formed bullocks / climbing the harsh arid wilderness, / together with the whistling of their curled lips, / run quickly ahead and offer assurance to strangers / who come along the great forest of tooth-brush trees in the long expanse of blazing sun; / if, desiring rare wealth, you think of setting out / on your deed, capable of living in parting, / well, speak it, may you live, O my heart! / Are you also capable of uttering words of strength, / saying: 'She whose black, abundant tresses, / soft as they feed on ordered jasmine buds, / spreading like water-ripples with pleasant tenderness, / will take comfort'?
