Except for forks in paths in the high forest,
plowmen with bows for plows who need no rain from the sky
made their hunt on that great day, rising as a kin-band,
on the battle-ground left with blood-red mouths,
with white necks that seem dotted with marks,
with red ears that seem adorned, the vultures,
on high branches with difficult forks of a tall-trunked yā tree risen on a low hill,
feed their young, and slipping swiftly from the beak, the fat-lumped piece of flesh
becomes food for an old fox stricken with killing hunger.
Such a wilderness tract would indeed be easy for us,
if only we did not forsake sweet sleep on the broad shoulders
of the young woman of gentle words, radiant with multi-faceted grace
in our good home, her smile resembling the quill of a feather.
