In the great-dawning early morning when heavy rain poured down,
in the moist, red loam where the soil was twice furrowed by the plow,
in the long, red ridges resembling torn flesh,
where many seeds were sown and have sprouted in the field,
like a herd of fine blackbuck antelopes spreading out,
the laborers, wearing palm-frond umbrellas on their heads with folded horns,
bending their backs in time with the roaring drum's beat,
have cleared the weeds from the vast fields of millet;
having pecked and fed on the black surface of forked ears of millet,
the long-feathered male peacock with a crested head
spreads his lovely plumage, and for safety,
sits on the bent branch of a strong-leaved kuruntu tree
where farm laborers left their porridge in the shade,
and calls out with a cry like women chasing away parrots.
This indeed is that rainy season, my friend,
which was the time he solemnly assured us, saying,
‘Driving our good horses with flowing manes, of swift speed,
harnessed to the tall chariot with a prominent rim fit for surging war,
we will surely return.’
