In the village rich in toddy where tall banners flutter,
men sell thick cuts of fat, big, dark varāl fish
caught at the morning ghat, and feast and dance;
then, forgetting their hunt, the husbands sleep,
while the old woman, in the early morning at break of day,
serves heaped, hot rice upon a broad leaf of the water lily,
adding the round, sweet-and-sour fruit of the rattan cane, O man of such a town!
Do not touch our jewels; do not come near us!
Because they destroyed the beauty of her father’s eyes, as retribution for that fault,
slaying the Kōcar clan of unerring word and ending their enmity,
stood Titiyaṉ of the swift chariot in Aḻuntai,
and like curved-earringed Anni Miñili
who strode there, walks she who is worthy of your beauty—
that chest of yours has embraced her!
