Though your eyes have lost the hue of the dark flower,
and your shoulders have grown thin like a bed of shedding blossoms,
do not grieve in the least, may you live, my friend,
with sorrow over losing your ancient beauty
that good people desired and praised!
Even if he crossed the ancient mountain of sweet honey
belonging to Kaṇṇaṉ Eḻiṉi of fierce army,
of battle-surpassing wealth, who routed enemies when the front line rose up,
he will not delay, so that your rows of bangles slip off—
like a soft-headed son clambering up and down the chest
of a triumphant warrior embraced by his gentle woman
with thick dark tresses that darken as they fall over her shoulders,
an eminent bull-elephant with white tusks, embracing his heavily pregnant gentle cow,
while their calf clambers up and down, sleeps [beside them];
crossing such a chilly wilderness tract, through mountain paths
with bright clusters of golden shower trees,
with a heart resolute upon its duty,
such is he who parted from us.
