Resembling white waves rushing upon the shore, / as sequential winds buffet them all together, / the falling blossoms of bur-flower trees on mountain slopes shed down clinging to rocks, / which weary elephants mistake for rainfall and wander in thirst for water; / resting in the sparse shade of a trembling withered tree whose dry, spider-webbed branches are bare, / while in a helpless gathered state as they chew withered maral fiber, / red dogs with firm-set teeth / sharp like the rounded tips of needles smoothed by a file raise a hunt; / when the herd of deer flees screaming at once like pūḷai blossoms in the face of the wind, / the stag calling out in a male voice in the sunset as rays fade, / leaving behind the ocean-like forest: 'If we go like others, / our going is good'—as such a longing heart urges without wavering, / you are fit to depart, O heart! / Yet even if I were to obtain wealth as great as / the lost land restored to Kalangkāykkaṇṇi Nārmuṭiccēral / with his unerring sword that brought victorious triumph, / when Nannaṉ adorned with gold ornaments fell on the battlefield / in the war at the great harbor of Vākai of abundant gold to the west, / I will not go, leaving behind the dark-complexioned maiden of large shoulders, / round, cool, and firmly knit like bamboo.
