'Whether she rejoices or whether she rages, / let mother know and understand,' they did not say; with evil mouths, / women fond of covert whispers engaging in public gossip / came to me for many days and said, 'She is such and such, your daughter,' / yet I never spoke of it to her, / thinking, 'She will be ashamed,' and kept it deeply hidden; / leaving me behind in this empty house, / she thought, 'If mother knows, life dwelling here / will not be easy for me,' and as the youth / with ankleted legs and a lightning-flashing long spear went ahead, / she traversed the difficult wasteland of many mountains; that I am / not [cruel] like that to her—may it prove truly so! / May she reach without suffering heat along the narrow paths at the foot of mountains / confused with tracks of wild beasts, and first, / in a small loneliness-gripped village by the desolate, dark mountain, / may I be the mistress of a house with vitex trees / whose shoots quiver and sway at their tips, / welcoming incoming guests and seating them in a shelter!
