What is to become [of me], my friend? Like the moving hands / of a hermaphrodite taking the guise of a woman at a fine revel, / the twisted horns of the buffalo spread out so as to cause laughter; / when little working boys mount upon its dark-skinned, broad back / that has the beauty of thick hair, to those far off / it looks like a female monkey on a boulder—the man from such a village / has sought marriage in an expansive city rich in festivals, / where the drumhead never dries, / so that amidst his garlands he might crush against his chest / the pearl-garlanded, swelling breasts of women / with dark, beautiful bodies like dark tender mango shoots and the rain-washed īṅkai tree, / adorned with choice jewels, with insatiable love; / sulking at this, like a large, ungathered mound / of long white salt on the front shore of Vīrai belonging to the battle-slaying Vēḷir, / which melts away under a heavy downpour, / these broad, soft shoulders have wasted away, and their fine jewels have slipped!
