She who had refused, saying rejecting words,
when [I] held sweet milk mixed with honey,
caressed her short locks, and spoke tender terms,
and who did not eat with a resentful heart—
did she drink now, sighing hotly, her crescent forehead sweating,
as the unrighteous man dug out a brackish, small-potted scoopful
from a clear-centred well in which rolled the rough, large trunk
of a long-tusked bull elephant, distressed by the gnawing sun,
whose cheeks concealed and then let flow bee-swarming musth,
in the fearful fork of the road splitting the hot desert,
on the stony, unsteady path kicked by the cloven hooves
of grey-backed donkeys laden with rows of heavy burdens,
which stalwart men, intent on grand deeds, set forth driving, taking omens from birds,
to carry the white-stone ambrosia from the drying salt pans
spread along the fear-inspiring sea unto the western realm?
