Like the flood that cannot be held by a salty embankment in heavy rain,
she has approached with love that knows no bounds of shame,
and has granted grace, coming forth—may she live long!—
the dark woman of fine, delicate tresses,
fragrant like the cool monsoon blossoms of Kolli,
fruitful with many-fruited jackfruit trees of Ōri,
even as the kinsfolk of Akutai, who has a brilliant, great army
that overcomes all to leave behind disgrace, brought relief
to the uproar raised by the distress of the many Vēḷ women
weeping over the colourful, fresh flower-garlands,
when Nannaṉ of fearsome form, out of mounting wrath and pitilessness, hid them
and did not go to see the battlefield, saying,
‘I will not look on the birds gathering to flap their wings and cast shade
in the bright-skied expanse, so the shining rays of the bright sun
do not scorch him,’
as Āay Eyinaṉ, the generous and delighted Vēṇmāṉ of Veḷiyam,
who gives majestic elephants with white tusks
if bards with slender wands, standing at his high portal in the dead of night,
sing of his hill whose peaks drip with honey,
fell in the confusion of flashing swords, deeply wounded,
in a midday battle with Miñili of the well-made chariot and adorned elephant
on the field of Pāḻi, where life was full of gracious ease!
