Listen, oh friend!
Even if he is in a land of strange tongues,
beyond Vēṅkaṭam with its dewy groves,
where every time a strong tusker with firm-set tusks
and enduring feet spread like the skin of a drum rubs against
the bur-flower trees with many white, lime-like blossoming flowers,
they scatter like cool hailstones from the rain
and dry upon the rocks where farmers sow white paddy seeds,
he will surely grant his grace—he who parted, making you weep,
leaving behind for us a village gossip
loud as the rushing roar of waters at the stony, cool ghat
raised by Matti at the portal of Veṇmaṇi with sturdy doors,
into which were driven the knocked-out teeth of illiterate Eḻini,
who was caught in the vanguard in the distant land,
going forth at the behest of his fiercely angered king
so that the large herd with calves, trapped in pits,
was left behind, failing to be rescued in the clamour of captured cow-elephants.
