தாஇல் நன்பொன் தைஇய பாவை
விண்தவழ் இளவெயிற் கொண்டுநின் றன்ன,
மிகுகவின் எய்திய, தொகுகுரல் ஐம்பால்,
கிளைஅரில் நாணற் கிழங்கு மணற்கு ஈன்ற
முளைஓ ரன்ன மின்எயிற்றுத் துவர் வாய்,
நயவன் தைவரும் செவ்வழி நல்யாழ்
இசைஓர்த் தன்ன இன்தீங் கிளவி,
அணங்குசால் அரிவையை நசைஇப், பெருங்களிற்று
இனம்படி நீரின் கலங்கிய பொழுதில்,
பெறலருங் குரையள் என்னாய், வைகலும்,
இன்னா அருஞ்சுரம் நீந்தி, நீயே
என்னை இன்னற் படுத்தனை; மின்னுவசிபு
உரவுக்கார் கடுப்ப மறலி மைந்துற்று,
விரவுமொழிக் கட்டூர் வேண்டுவழிக் கொளீஇ,
படைநிலா இலங்கும் கடல்மருள் தானை
மட்டவிழ் தெரியல் மறப்போர்க் குட்டுவன்
பொருமுரண் பெறாஅது விலங்குசினஞ் சிறந்து,
செருச்செய் முன்பொடு முந்நீர் முற்றி,
ஓங்குதிரைப் பௌவம் நீங்க ஓட்டிய
நீர்மாண் எஃகம் நிறத்துச்சென்று அழுந்தக்
கூர்மதன் அழியரோ- நெஞ்சே!- ஆனாது
எளியள் அல்லோட் கருதி,
விளியா எவ்வம் தலைத் தந்தோயே.

Like a statue fashioned of flawless fine gold
standing in the mild light crawling from the sky,
she attained supreme beauty, with thick tresses dressed fivefold,
coral mouth with shining teeth resembling the shoots
borne by reeds rooted in tangled clumps within the sand,
and sweet, tender speech like listening to the music
of the fine yāḻ of sevvvaḻi tune stroked by a lover—
longing for that woman possessed of divine torment,
at a time when my mind was roiled like water trodden by a herd of great male elephants,
without saying, 'She is hard to attain,' every day,
you swam through the painful, difficult wasteland and
plunged me into distress! May your sharp strength
be destroyed, O heart!, as the water-honed spear sinks deep into your chest—
spear of Kuṭṭuvaṉ of fierce warfare wearing honey-dripping garlands,
whose ocean-like army glistens like moonlight on weapons,
who, raging with strength like a thunder-ripping storm
and pitching his camp of mixed tongues wherever he pleased,
finding no foe worthy to fight him, his thwarted anger mounting,
with battle-making power surrounded the ocean
and drove off the sea of high waves!—
O heart, desiring her who is not easily won,
you gave me ceaseless suffering!
