அடுபுகழ் மேவலொடு கண்படை இலனே;
Spreading to bury the wide, dark realm of the sky
and hiding the sun, the heaven of many rays
pours ceaseless ruining drops of heavy rain,
chilling the long ranks of dark bull-elephants;
and the king, defying fierce foes, in the encampment
where long radiant spears with raised blades flash,
yearning for slaying fame, does not sleep;
and battle is upon us. The woman with abundant hair,
who understood our mind and trusted that we are hers,
how will she endure,
hearing all alone the clear music tormenting life
on this rainy evening, when cowherds driving cattle
blend the sweet note of the water-lily with wide-mouthed clear bells
hanging on the high shoulders of tall bulls,
and play the sorrowful tune of sevvvaḻi on the fine yāḻ?
