The billowing white clouds, swollen after raining, / like flakes of cotton carded by an iron bow, / shed their mist and drizzle; in wide fields / the white flowers on the jointed stalks of long-stemmed sugarcane / sway along with the wind-blown dry pūḷai blossoms; / in every bush thick with green leaves, / the pakanṟai blossoms white, hiding the dark-tinged green, / like the skin-covered round tambourine struck by hands; / plump buds of broad-leaved avarai burst open, / and seasonal tōṉṟi flowers unfurl their bright blooms; / in every field flocks of herons screech loudly, / and women at wide bathing ghats leave off ornaments and shiver. / The early winter has arrived, and it is proper: / 'Whatever wealth you may attain, do not part!' / Thus do I declare, may you prosper, to those who cling to their mates! / Gazing upon this wasted form deserted by my ungenerous lover / after consuming my beauty, affliction assails me; / with a heart that shatters into fragments, longing for union, / I shall tremble, clenching my teeth until sparks fly, / suffering fierce frost, if he departs.
