The swift-striding, strong male elephant, cherishing his herd, / feeds [his mate] tender shoots and makes her eat the leaves she craves; / lightning shines brightly with sword-like brilliance, / heavy drops scatter in showers, the skies thrum, / and rolling thunder shakes the cold peaks of the great mountain / at midnight thick with dark rain. / 'Unless holding your shapely, rounded shoulders, / having the comely grace adorned with fine jewels, / our eyes will not close in sleep,' you said; / yet in the disorienting dark night, where the path is lost, / where the striped, mighty tiger lies in wait for passers-by, / you do not think it difficult to cross the great mountain chasms, / and reckon it easy to come. Therefore, / if we do not closely embrace even for a day / your chest that smells cool with finely wrought, excellent pearl garlands, / we too shall waste away, our fine jewels slipping down. / Let my mother come to know it, if she must! / Let the rumor-mouthed ancient town hear it, if it will! / Come during the day to the cool, vast mountain slopes / where the fragrant kino blossoms mingle / with the flame-like tōṉṟi flowers humming with bees!
