Striding playfully so her anklets chimed in the grand, renown-filled house, / even if she lightly threw the ball with her playmates during the ōrai game, / I would entreat her, 'Come here!', and holding in my capable hand / a bowl filled with milk like the large-leaved pakanṟai's white blossom brimming with dew, / I would feed her, saying, 'If you take a mouthful for my sake, / take one mouthful for your father's sake too!' / Having done noble things for her ever since she was born, / now that my golden-braceleted little girl whom I lovingly nurtured / has departed with a man devoid of virtue, / my heart, which cannot forget and remain at peace, grieves: / frightened by a red dog with sharp white teeth as if cast in gold, / the spotted male deer flees; / and when the blazing summer wind blows through the hollow, withered dry wood / of the rough-trunked wood-apple, herdsmen take it for a flute / in that waterless, vast expanse— / exhausted, her tender grace drooping, / will she walk? Thus I grieve.
