'நுதல்பசந் தன்றே; தோள்சா யினவே;
திதலை அல்குல் வரியும் வாடின;
என்ஆ குவள்கொல் இவள்?' எனப் பல்மாண்
நீர்மலி கண்ணொடு நெடிது நினைந்து ஒற்றி,
இனையல்- வாழி, தோழி!- நனை கவுள்
காய்சினம் சிறந்த வாய்புகு கடாத் தொடு
முன்னிலை பொறாஅது முரணிப், பொன்னிணர்ப்
புலிக்கேழ் வேங்கைப் பூஞ்சினை புலம்ப,
முதல்பாய்ந் திட்ட முழுவலி ஒருத்தல்
செந்நிலப் படுநீறு ஆடிச், செருமலைந்து,
களம்கொள் மள்ளரின் முழங்கும் அத்தம்
பலஇறந்து அகன்றனர் ஆயினும், நிலைஇ,
நோய்இல ராக, நம் காதலர்!- வாய்வாள்,
தமிழ் அகப் படுத்த இமிழிசை முரசின்
வருநர் வரையாப் பெருநாள் இருக்கை,
தூங்கல் பாடிய ஓங்குபெரு நல்லிசைப்
பிடிமிதி வழுதுணைப் பெரும்பெயர்த் தழும்பன்
கடிமதில் வரைப்பின் ஊணூர் உம்பர்,
விழுநிதி துஞ்சும் வீறுபெறு திருநகர்.
இருங்கழிப் படப்பை மருங்கூர்ப் பட்டினத்து,
எல்லுமிழ் ஆவணத்து அன்ன,
கல்லென் கம்பலை செய்து அகன்றோரே!

"Her forehead has paled; her shoulders have thinned; / the lines on her freckled mound of Venus have withered; / what will become of her?" — thinking thus at length, / wiping away tears that brim abundantly from your eyes, / do not grieve, live long, my friend! / With temple-juice flowing into its mouth from cheeks wet with swelling fury, / an elephant bull of complete strength, refusing to bear anyone standing before it, / attacked and toppled the trunk of a tiger-striped vēṅkai tree laden with golden clusters / so that its blossoming boughs were stripped bare, / rolled in the dust of the red earth, joined battle, / and trumpeted like warriors taking the battlefield; / though our lover has crossed many such desert paths and gone far away, / may he endure without suffering! / Above Ūṇūr, enclosed by guarded walls, belonging to the renowned Taḻumpaṉ of mighty fame / sung by Tūṅkal, [ruler of] Piṭimitivaḻutuṇai, / who holds his grand court every day without barring visitors, / with rumbling-sounding drums that brought the Tamil land under sway with a true sword — / in the port town of Maruṅkūr, with its wide backwater gardens, / a glorious, wealthy city where rich treasures sleep, / like the loud clamour of its bright, radiating market, / he departed, leaving behind a loud, bustling town scandal!
