"As the lord of the chariot with many rays, who creates day, / cuts deep into the wide-spread sky, / along the endless, long path dry and devoid of water, / tender female elephants with curve-clawed calves with soft heads / shun foliage and droop in their flanks, / appearing in groups like abandoned huts in a ruined village. / Having crossed the mountains that lie far away, / let the great wealth striven for by men skilled in false promises / be attained quickly, even without us! / Do not let great distress overcome you, poor young girl!" / Looking upon your fine dark-complexioned body with spots and lines being ruined, / as sparse trickling tears, shed in profusion from pain, / blot out the pupils of your rain-like, multi-petaled eyes, / and gold-like pallor spreads over you, / you tell me not to grieve, my friend! / Yet in this sweet, early summer, / when the red-eyed dark koel calls delightfully / from atop the swaying branches of the mango tree with lovely shoots, / plucking the blossoms unfolding in buds and feeding on the pollen / of the murukku whose branches bear red buds from green shoots, / he has not returned — / he who assured me, "We will return this very moment!"
