'உறுகழி மருங்கின் ஓதமொடு மலர்ந்த
சிறுகரு நெய்தற் கண்போல் மாமலர்ப்
பெருந்தண் மாத்தழை இருந்த அல்குல்,

"Young girl of bright forehead and dark moist tresses, / with sharp teeth and subtle freckles budding, / wearing on your wide mound of Venus an ample, cool leaf-garment / of large blossoms resembling the eyes of small, dark neytal / blooming with the tide beside the full backwater! / If you, having scooped up like gold the fine pollen of the punnai / shed upon the white sand by your playmates, / guard this house — then, O charming maiden, / would there be any harm / if this household duty were shared with us?" / As the skilled charioteer slowly drove / the tall chariot with a flagpole and swift-galloping, fine horses, / and I drew near to her, / holding back the tears that welled in her kohl-rimmed eyes streaked with red lines of lifting beauty, / she bowed her head slightly — / leaving me here in great distress!
