Look now—may you live long, my friend! At midnight, / hearing the roaring sound of thunder, the dark elephant / that eats bamboo, mistaking it for a tiger and taking fright, / retreats while the clefts of the dark mountain echo. / The intimacy with the man of the great mountain has now / resulted in this season for us, when / in our small settlement bordered by hills, / gold blossoms fall from sapphire-like buds / that flowered on an auspicious day upon the vēṅkai of the public square, / streaking the broad stone of the front yard, / resembling the bustling festival ground where the hill men / dance the kuravai with the elder women of the household— / day after day, mother mingles mixed flowers in offering, / intends to guard the protected, broad mansion, / and the Vēlaṉ brings forth Murukaṉ!
