Listen—may you live long, my friend! Yearning for wealth, / does our lover not remember? Or even if he remembers, / has he forgotten [us] because of paramount duties?— / Pouring to soften the fertile earth, resentful of dry weather, / the great rain of the east wind, having approached the mountain, / gathers with dark clouds and rises to drop rain; / rising along with the north wind, the choice petals of the glory lily / unloose their tight bindings like burning lamps; / the white flowers of the curled-bud mucuṇṭai, bursting their bundles, / adorn the fresh grass like stars that adorn the sky; / the crab retreats into its earthen hole; in the broad fields / the white flowers on the shaft-like stalks of sugarcane spreading branches / droop, damp like rain herons; / displaying great, intense redness and inducing fear, / the harsh north wind, steeped in cold, / afflicts [us] pitilessly in the bewitching evening; / and he does not say: 'Afflicted, her former beauty destroyed, / along with the gossip-inducing pallor that has taken hold of her forehead, / what will happen to her, the pitiful one?'
