Feeding eagerly on the fatty cuts of golden hue / from the great fish caught in the clear-water pool / dense with sapphire-like muḷḷi flowers, / after the reapers of white paddy leave their places, / multiple sheaves of long ears of grain, packed in the spaces between, / carry frost on their bent backs; in the grove, / fresh flowers from the swaying branches of dark-trunked mango trees / scatter like drops from a drizzling rain— / not knowing the greatness of love for the man from such a town, / I was quite delivered from it, my friend, may you live long! / In an abode of seclusion like women of curved earrings / shining with fair silk over bright sandalwood on the chest, / without knowing it, in my devastated heart, / like Ātimanti, who lost her lover, her eyes streaming with tears, / wailing, 'The ocean has taken him! The river has hidden him!' / as she searched from country to country, from town to town: / 'Have you not seen Āṭṭaṉ Atti / with his handsome stride like that of an ox, his abundant might, / and his tuft of hair entwined with long dark curls of foliage?' / —I would have voiced my distress and suffered great madness!
