"In the summer season, when the cuckoo has learned its song,
and the southern wind cuts through fragrant branches humming with bees
of the kuravu tree whose buds mature resembling serpents' teeth,
while round, ochre-tinted fallen flowers of the slender-trunked pādiri
streak the fine ripples of sand together with the delicate-vined adiral,
the night passes painfully, keeping sleep away!"
Saying this, so that the adorned beauty of your fine, dark body suffers in loneliness,
cease grieving, O lady of fine jewels!
Even if he were to obtain Uṟantai, washed by flowing waters,
where fat cuts of rich meat, roasted on fiercely glowing red fire,
are distributed in bowls scattered with the soft porridge of tender millet,
together with sweet syrup pressed from mature canes of sugarcane
in fields where heavy ears of grain wave, along with tender flaked rice
made from red paddy mixed with milk—
he will not abandon for the sake of wealth his work,
leaving behind the water springing from your sharp, beautiful, white teeth,
and your kohl-lined eyes, reddish at the corners, that look gently and tenderly!
