O lord of the country of great hills,
where a heavily-striped, massive male tiger with a neck thick as a drum,
seeking prey at midnight upon slopes cloaked in darkness,
in order to provide food of young deer because his mate, exhausted from giving birth, is famished,
strikes down in victory a proud wild ox of wide horns in the vast forest,
while soft-eyed wild cows shriek across the region,
and drags it across, reddening the wide, dark rock
in the forest thick with trees where dawn is unknown!
If you must part,
do you possess a remedy for the fragrant forehead smelling of cool, fresh blossoms,
whose soft-fastened buds have opened and bloomed on the kāntaḷ
standing beside the solid base of a palmyra tree,
on the sweet, dark, cloud-swept mountainside where thick buds burst open,
in the realm of Naḷḷi of swift horses, of broad hands adorned with warrior anklets,
of generous joy, whose gifts of jewel-adorned tall chariots together with male elephants
are like the rains pouring unceasingly for those who beg?
