Piteous indeed! What will become of it?
The public square cannot be seen, and even the trees are fading away—
the great, good village of that small, fine woman,
who, in a short yet lingering sulk,
spoke many sweet words with us only yesterday, saying:
"If you depart in pursuit of wealth so difficult to amass,
crossing many pathways through diverse, distant lands
where, in the fierce wasteland, resounds the clamor of the fight
after red-eyed men roaring like tigers,
with well-drawn arrows held with bow-rests,
have raided an entire village by day and captured herds of cattle,
leaving me behind here in the dreary evening
when women of bright jewels, with dotted painted designs and speckled beauty spots,
worship the high crescent moon—
will you not linger, O noble lord?"
