The littoral woods are now lonely and desolate,
as the cool-winged heron, mindful of its solitary chick
in the large, dark-barked branches of the red-flowered ñāḻal,
flies above the dark backwaters where blue neytal flowers bloom like gems;
and our father has gone out into the night to show the shoals of fish
under the torches of the sturdy boats that struggle across the surge of the deep sea;
over there, mother too, with her attendants, is busy worshipping
and praising with joined hands the cool, sacred shore inhabited by spirits;
and as for you, if you desire sweet sleep
upon her breast with bud-like, shapely breasts resembling the buds of the koṅku,
stroking her fair forehead framed by honey-dripping tresses—
come indeed to the cool, lovely grove of punnai trees thatched with flowers,
in the alleys of white sand where serundi flowers have unfolded with swarming bees,
to unite with her and take your leave!
