Like the tender core left after an unsparing non-brahmin conch-cutter
has sliced with his sharp saw,
the twisted-faced bindweed flowers blossom
when the fine, scattered raindrops drizzle, as their top bonds loosen
in the late days of the cold showers that set in in the month of Tai,
at dawn when the biting north wind hides the radiant sun,
and dark clouds drift across the wide expanse as if tearing the sky,
heading toward the southern lands—
on such cold, dark nights, swimming alone through them,
that woman of lovely forehead stays in her town;
while we, in the camp of the fiercely angered king,
where the tiny-eyed elephant's long-tongued, bright bell tolls—
its blunt, white tusks whose ferrule rings split and tips dulled
from battering against the gate of the fortified wall—
mingled with the arrows raining against tightly bound black shields
and the roaring sound of drums, at the midnight hour,
stay with his army asleep through the night,
with strong arms bearing swords that never return to their sheaths!
