“The rapid waters of the forest river with high banks have subsided,
and in the wide ghat of mingled sand with shining ripples,
in every grove bordering the cool pool, the sand dunes abound with buds
adorned with the green pollen of the kāñci tree,
richly infused anew with the scent of wedlock;
the sapphire-hued dark cuckoo, picking at mango shoots,
its calling tongue never ceasing, standing in the middle, calls everyday
in turn as if to speak [to us];
there, in the silk-cotton tree from which flocks of birds have shaken [flowers],
the fine pollen of the flowering branch of the koṅku tree resembles
gold poured into a coral box by merchants;
surely those who set the season of the young days
which even despisers do not despise, appointed it as the sign!”
—saying so, as tear-drops trickle and fall from your sorrowing, kohl-rimmed eyes,
with a heart parched because he has not returned,
“I grieve, little maiden! May my life suffer!”
speaking soft and sweet words, he will swiftly
come, may you live, O tōḻi!
He who crossed the forest of waterfalls on the rock,
resounding like sweet-sounding musical instruments of Titiyaṉ of the golden chariot,
the lord of the Podiyil mountain with large bow-holding hands
who conquers fighters on the marching battlefield!
