"He is sweet indeed, with an unwavering love joined without resentment!"
Thus she says, without displeasure, speaking only good things of him;
and yet he who is truly ours, who once stayed by her side with unparting love
day after day—may you live, my friend!—
has crossed the mountains of good trees,
where red-faced, downy-headed female monkeys leap
among the round seeds, tasting sweet, of the wasteland nelli
scattered like spherical dice on the ground;
where, as the rains have forgotten the place and waterfalls have ceased
in the terrifying, vast expanse, while young shoots of bamboo shrivel on high peaks
and the wide wilderness scorches as bamboo poles rattle,
a solitary, mature, large stag, mistaken about a pale mirage and running towards it as if rain,
falls into distress, yet unable to migrate and dwell in a different realm,
suffers and stays on in the strange, burning forest with drooping head!
