As exquisite flowers of the field-bean drop, / and the thorny climber blossoms like coral bored with holes, / and the morning-glory of the moist thicket unfolds its drooping petals, / adorning the vicinity of the town with murmuring fine drizzle, / and the fresh arrival of rainwater ceases, / the cruel north wind, rumbling noisily, has arrived swiftly / after stirring the flattened rice made from ears of abundant paddy / in the fields where prominent stalks bend heavy with full grains! / If only we could know his state, / while explaining our helplessness / in living without a companion, lamenting in distress, / not standing firm, crying, "You have come from afar!"— / that would indeed be good; / with eyes streaming with cold tears, / it has now become our sorrow alone; / such, friend, is the fruit of our past deeds!
