He who abandoned my well-esteemed chest, letting tears drop
like unpierced pearls across my beautiful breasts, to lament alone,
has no grace—may you live long, my friend! Desiring wealth,
he did not think, "This is an impassable forest,"
where the flame-mouthed male of a great clan of bears,
wearying of the white blossoms on black branches of the iruppai tree,
digs into the large head of a huge red anthill;
and where, in ruined tracts where enmity raged,
killer-proficient wild elephants, watching for men, seize control of the wasteland;
and crossing many troubled paths of diverging ways,
he has traversed the jagged peaks of towering mountains,
where flocks of vultures with long feather-necked throats,
seeking foul carrion, dwell on distant crests.
