Why is it so, may you live long, my friend? As fine pollen
from clusters where bees hum on the bent laurel trees
that endure waves swelling with mingled spray streaked lines
upon the fragrant dunes of fresh sand so that it looked charming,
while we joined and played with our gathered companions,
sending away his youthful attendants along with his tall chariot with its curved staff,
one man wearing garlands, wearing a chaplet, drew near,
and praising our sandcastles with words, without obtaining any answer
at all, departed. Because of that,
with unbearable affliction and distress, our great shoulders languish,
and troubled by the loud gossip of the red-lipped women
of the little settlement in the seaside grove of the fishermen with pretty nets,
along with us whose joint-bracelets have grown loose,
the harbor too sleeps not in the dead of night!
