"Every day, as pallor of separation spreads, my body
becomes drastically altered; suddenly,
mother shows a displeased face; the town gossip is
greater even than the sweet-sounding roar played in Kūṭal,
the gold-rich large city of the Pāṇḍya wearing fresh ornaments,
who drove off the Koṅkar with their unfading flowers
and won many lands; here I
seem unlikely to survive for many days," thus brooding over many things,
do not sink in sorrow—may you live, my friend!—Even if he has crossed
the Ayiri river in the good land of Erumai of great fame,
the lord of the fierce-shouldered Vaṭukar who, in the dark middle of the night,
drives handsome cows, cutting through the enemy lines, striking down many herds,
knowing the long-calling whistle of the cowherds rich in flocks,
who, seizing the stall-pens of those living on hard-grained food
stored in full loads within wide hollow bamboo stems
bound low around the sturdy scarred necks of good shaking-dewlapped bulls
that lead the herds back, brings forth great herds with calves to fill the public square—
he will cast off all confusion
and surely remember your gaze, crowned with gleaming ear-ornaments
worn upon your lovely face like the moon marked with a tilaka
set in the vast sky, you of bamboo-like arms,
youthful tender breasts budding with freckles,
and low-hanging dark tresses whose weight ruins your waist.
